Every so often, there’s a memorial that is particularly striking and poignant that it leaves a mark. Of course, the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC is one of those. The Holocaust Memorial in Miami is another. The Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown PA, too.
The Maine Vietnam Veterans Memorial is on the list. It’s in a mostly quiet spot across the street and in view of the Capitol dome. It’s almost surrounded by trees for some peace and quiet. And the missing cutout of steel in the shape of the soldiers who died is clever and evocative and really powerful. Very well done.
