This was the first stop on our food tour and this shop is likely something I would not have found without. So glad we did.
“Pastéis de Chaves” is a protected designation of origin (PDO) product as they can only be made in Chaves. Much like there are other bubbly wines but there is only one Champagne and there are lots of cheeses but Gouda cheese can only come from the Netherlands. So these delicious pastries are made daily about 90 minutes to the northeast and trucked in to Porto.
They ARE delicious. We had two, one savory and one sweet. The savory was filled with a chicken and spices, which was delicious. The other, a goat cheese. Hard to choose which I liked best, but the flaky pastry was excellent and a good start for the day.
You know it’s good when you want more. And I did!
