Located directly in front of the famous Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral), this weather-worn statue remembers the first ruler of the “County of Portugal” which is pretty much the areas around Braga and Porto. Vímara Peres was a ninth-century nobleman from the Kingdom of Asturias (northeastern Iberia).
The statue has seen better days and even the caption has had a couple of letters fall off. As a man so important to Porto and Portugal, he should be in better shape.
